World News: February 21, 2020 Is Inaugural World Kombucha Day!
The true origins of kombucha are hotly debated, but the story that gets the most press and agreement was that the cult of this famed elixir all started in China, around 221 BCE. However big or small that cult following was back then, it probably would never have been imagined that a little SCOBY’s following would be as big as it is today. Which is why it’s finally about to get it’s due...
This February 21st, 2020 (2.21 – get it?!) is the inaugural World Kombucha Day!!! The frenetic fans can finally rejoice that this liquid love of our lives will now officially be on calendars, to celebrate its culture, community, frisky fizz, and tantalizing tang for a full 24 hours! We think it’s safe to say that we, my fermenting friends, have officially made it.
But... ok... how do you celebrate a SCOBY?
Of course, World Kombucha Day is about your favorite drink, all the stories we all have surrounding our interactions with it, and your celebration for it being a part of your life – but as with all kombucha lovers and makers, it’s about more than just the ‘booch.
That little SCOBY floating at the bottom is actually a great role model. It takes all the best stuff from nature, and the culture around it, holds it in its very being (it gives the little one life, of course), and sits with it, waiting to give it all back to those that choose to interact with it. And the ones that do, walk away with a whole host of benefit from it.
These are actually our ethics exactly, rolled into one word: symbiosis - A healthy culture made from the best things on this planet, and the diversity in it all, engaged in collaboration with the environment around us, all with the goal of transparent giving and receiving that can sustain itself through generations.
And this is how you celebrate that day, even if you don’t like kombucha. We encourage you, on 2/21, to not only drink kombucha like crazy, or give it a try, but really be present in your environment – the planet and people around you – feel it deeply, take it in, and do something, multiple things that day, to give the things that sustained you right back.
Play music. Tell someone how much they mean to you. Volunteer at a shelter because someone told you to “Pay it forward” once. Go join a community clean up of a street or park. Plant something, metaphorically or literally. You’ ve gotten to be alive this long and learn enough to read these words. You’re so lucky.
Now go down your favorite ‘booch (duh... Seek North), and go get energized to give all of that back. Post on our IG or Facebook what you did. We can’t wait to celebrate with you.
